My kitchen is pretty much a logistical nightmare. Our home was built in the 1890’s, and has a pantry/scullery rather than cabinets throughout the space. While the vintage sink and a few other features are quaint, I long for a fully renovated kitchen, with ample cabinet space and a large island with counter height stools.
Since I have worked in restaurants much of my adult life, I’m accustomed to open shelving and having things right at your fingertips. I have managed to improve the workability of this dinosaur, with a free-standing hutch, a bay of open shelving I built a few years back and a partable butcher block, but have found this solution has it’s own problems. Open shelves are dust collectors, and I am tired of the cluttered look they create.
Perhaps someday I will have my dream kitchen, until then, I will have to rely on yankee ingenuity, to keep things functioning well.
